Travelling to Africa for the LGBTQ+ community can be daunting; however, many countries are welcoming and provide the most amazing experience for everyone.
I frequently recommend South Africa, as it’s a very safe and welcoming place. I'd discourage members of this community from visiting Uganda, Namibia, and some other areas such as Zanzibar.
South Africa is known for its diversity and warm hospitality, and there are many destinations within the country that are open-minded and inclusive. Cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg have well-established LGBTQ+ communities, and many lodges and safari destinations pride themselves on providing a welcoming and respectful environment for all guests.
That said, as with travel anywhere in the world, it’s always good to be mindful of local attitudes in different regions. While major tourist areas are generally accepting, rural areas may be more conservative. A combination of Cape Town and a safari in the Kruger area, Sabi Sands, or Timbavati would be a safe, wonderful experience for everyone.
Private travel is best, as you have your own vehicle and guide, making it easier to customise the experience and cater to all requirements. We would not recommend for clients to join an existing tour group but rather tailor the trip to ensure the best experience possible.
Finally, look for travel companies who are members of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) as they should be better equipped to provide relevant advice and services.
